   • Because of it’s shorter, more accessible hike, Lake of the Clouds tends to be one of the most busy areas in the park so be aware when choosing what time of year to elope if this is a place you are interested in.
2. Summit Peak
   • For couples who want a high-elevation ceremony, Summit Peak is the highest point in the park. From the observation tower, you’ll get expansive views of untouched wilderness stretching for miles – ideal for adventurous couples looking for a unique location.
3. Presque Isle River Waterfalls
   • If you love waterfalls, the Presque Isle River area is a must. With multiple cascading falls and scenic river views, the spot is perfect for a romantic and secluded elopement.
   • If you hike up the trail, north you will open up to one of the most scenic views of Lake Superior. The river flows right into the lake.
   • The trails here, depending on the season, are generally pretty moderate to hike.

   • The hike from Lake of the Clouds to Mirror lake is a bit strenuous, but definitely doable for most hikers. Make a weekend of your elopement and stay at the many rustic cabins on Mirror Lake.    • There are also many backcountry campsites throughout on this trail from Lake of the Clouds to Mirror Lake. A backcountry permit is required.

1. Choose the Best Time of Year for YOU!
   • Each season in the Porcupine Mountains offers a unique experience, so consider what kind of atmosphere you want for your elopement. Fall can be unique with the vibrant foliage, while summer offers the easiest accessibility.
   • There are also some drawbacks to each season as well.
   • In my personal experience, early Fall can be the most rewarding. This is when the leaves are at their peak color, it’s not as hot like summer, but still a little cool. The crowds tend to not be as busy depending on the year and weather.
   • Winter can be very beautiful, but keep in mind most things are closed and a lot of the roads around the park tend to close do to not being accessible because of the heavy snow. Many get around in the UP via snowmobile during the winter.
2. Get the Necessary Permits
   • While elopements are welcomed in the park, a special-use permit may be required for ceremonies. Always check with Michigan’s Department of Nature Resources (DNR) for current rules and regulations.
   • If you plan on camping in the park, you will need a backcountry parmit.

   • It can get muddy on some of the trails. I highly recommend wearing a good, sturdy pair of hiking boots if you plan to hike for your elopement. And, it’s totally okay to wear hiking boots with your wedding dress! Especially if you are hiking people and you love the outdoors, these are the kinds of things that shows who you are!
   • Also remember to be respectful of others enjoying the park and of the nature of the park. Be aware of Leave No Trace principles.
5. Pack for the Weather
   • The Upper Peninsula’s weather can be unpredictable. Dress in layers, bring a rain jacket just in case, and prepare for cooler evenings – especially in fall and early summer.
   • If you plan on wearing your full wedding get up to hike through the Porkies, it’s important to make sure you are wearing layers like fleece-lined leggings under your dress and wearing wool socks to keep your feet warm when they get wet.
6. Consider Lodging and Michigan Vendors
   • Stay in a cozy cabin, rustic lodge, or a scenic campground for a true wilderness experience. Local towns like Ontonagon and Silver City offer small-town charm and places to stay before or after your elopement.
