If you’re dreaming of an adventurous, intimate wedding surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, an elopement in the Porcupine Mountains might be the perfect choice. Known as Michigan’s last great wilderness, the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park – often called “the Prokies” – offers stunning views, secluded waterfalls, and rugged landscapes that create an unforgettable backdrop for your special day.

In this guide, we’ll cover why you should elope in the Porcupines, the best locations, the best time of year, and how to plan a stress-free elopement in this remote yet magical part of Michigan.

Why Elope in the Porcupine Mountains?

  1. Breathtaking Scenery for an Unforgettable Experience
    • The Porcupine Mountains feature majestic cliffs, dense forests, and stunning Lake Superior vistas, making them one of the most beautiful locations for an intimate wedding in Michigan. Whether you want a dramatic overlook, a secluded waterfall, or a quiet beach ceremony, the Porkies have it all.
  2. Privacy and Seclusion for an Intimate Wedding
    • Unlike busy wedding venues, an elopement in the Porcupine Mountains gives you peace, solitude, and a deep connection to nature. With over 60,000 acres of protected land, you’ll have plenty of options to find a quiet, romantic spot away from crowds.
  3. Four-Season Beauty for Any Elopement Style
    • Spring: Lush green forests, rushing waterfalls, and fewer visitors. Beware of lingering winter cold and rain.
    • Summer: Warm temperatures, stunning sunsets over Lake Superior, and easy hiking access. Larger crowds can cause less areas to be intimate.
    • Fall: Vibrant autumn foliage, crisp air, and breathtaking mountain views. It can be chilly so dress appropriately.
    • Winter: Snow-covered landscapes for a dreamy, adventurous winter elopement. Be prepared for many areas AND roads being closed.
  4. Budget-Friendly Alternative to a Traditional Wedding
    • Traditional weddings can be expensive, but an elopement in the Porcupines allows you to focus on what matters most – your love story. You can save on venue costs and instead invest in an incredible experience, stunning photography, and a romantic honeymoon in the Upper Peninsula.

Best Locations for an Elopement in the Porkies

  1. Lake of the Clouds
    • The most iconic viewpoint in the Porcupine Mountains, Lake of the Clouds offers breathtaking panoramic views. A short hike from the parking lot leads to an incredible overlook, making it perfect for a sunrise or sunset elopement.
    • Because of it’s shorter, more accessible hike, Lake of the Clouds tends to be one of the most busy areas in the park so be aware when choosing what time of year to elope if this is a place you are interested in.
  2. Summit Peak
    • For couples who want a high-elevation ceremony, Summit Peak is the highest point in the park. From the observation tower, you’ll get expansive views of untouched wilderness stretching for miles – ideal for adventurous couples looking for a unique location.
  3. Presque Isle River Waterfalls
    • If you love waterfalls, the Presque Isle River area is a must. With multiple cascading falls and scenic river views, the spot is perfect for a romantic and secluded elopement.
    • If you hike up the trail, north you will open up to one of the most scenic views of Lake Superior. The river flows right into the lake.
    • The trails here, depending on the season, are generally pretty moderate to hike.
  4. Union Bay Beach
    • For a relaxed, lakeside ceremony, Union Bay Beach offers soft sand, gentle waves, and stunning sunsets over Lake Superior. It’s an ideal location for couples who want a simple yet breathtaking setting.
    • Located near the Porcupine Mountains Sky Area, and right off of the main road into the park, this makes this location an easy access.
  5. Mirror Lake
    • For true seclusion, hike to Mirror Lake, a hidden gem in the park. The calm, reflective waters and surrounding forest create a peaceful and intimate setting for your vows.
    • The hike from Lake of the Clouds to Mirror lake is a bit strenuous, but definitely doable for most hikers. Make a weekend of your elopement and stay at the many rustic cabins on Mirror Lake. There are also a number of rustic cabins throughout the entire park as well. You can make a reservation on the state website!
    • There are also many backcountry campsites throughout on this trail from Lake of the Clouds to Mirror Lake. A backcountry permit is required.

How to Plan Your Porcupine Mountains Elopement

  1. Choose the Best Time of Year for YOU!
    • Each season in the Porcupine Mountains offers a unique experience, so consider what kind of atmosphere you want for your elopement. Fall can be unique with the vibrant foliage, while summer offers the easiest accessibility.
    • There are also some drawbacks to each season as well.
    • In my personal experience, early Fall can be the most rewarding. This is when the leaves are at their peak color, it’s not as hot like summer, but still a little cool. The crowds tend to not be as busy depending on the year and weather.
    • Winter can be very beautiful, but keep in mind most things are closed and a lot of the roads around the park tend to close do to not being accessible because of the heavy snow. Many get around in the UP via snowmobile during the winter.
  2. Get the Necessary Permits
    • While elopements are welcomed in the park, a special-use permit may be required for ceremonies. Always check with Michigan’s Department of Nature Resources (DNR) for current rules and regulations.
    • If you plan on camping in the park, you will need a backcountry parmit.
  3. Hire an Elopement Photographer and Videographer
    • A place as stunning as the Porcupine Mountains deserves professional photography and videography. Hiring a team that specializes in outdoor elopements ensures that your special day is beautifully captured, even in challenging lighting or remote locations.
    • Make sure you are hiring someone who has been here and has hiked these trails. While the trails are marked, this is the wild and it is a remote location. It’s easy to get lost. Plus, hiring someone who knows the park, makes it so you don’t miss that best place for a portrait that will show off the beauty of the park, but also capture your love in it.
    • We are a photo and video team that has been through the Porkies and we would love to capture your elopement here! To find out more about us, check out our website!
  4. Plan for Accessibility and Hiking
    • Some of the best elopement spots in the Porkies require short to moderate hikes. If you’re eloping in a remote area, consider wearing comfortable shoes.
    • It can get muddy on some of the trails. I highly recommend wearing a good, sturdy pair of hiking boots if you plan to hike for your elopement. And, it’s totally okay to wear hiking boots with your wedding dress! Especially if you are hiking people and you love the outdoors, these are the kinds of things that shows who you are!
    • Also remember to be respectful of others enjoying the park and of the nature of the park. Be aware of Leave No Trace principles.
  5. Pack for the Weather
    • The Upper Peninsula’s weather can be unpredictable. Dress in layers, bring a rain jacket just in case, and prepare for cooler evenings – especially in fall and early summer.
    • If you plan on wearing your full wedding get up to hike through the Porkies, it’s important to make sure you are wearing layers like fleece-lined leggings under your dress and wearing wool socks to keep your feet warm when they get wet.
  6. Consider Lodging and Michigan Vendors
    • Stay in a cozy cabin, rustic lodge, or a scenic campground for a true wilderness experience. Local towns like Ontonagon and Silver City offer small-town charm and places to stay before or after your elopement.
    • There are many cities within a couple hour drive as well for more modern conveniences. Cities like Marquette, Houghton, and Ironwood are an easy drive away.
    • Choosing Michigan vendors that are nearby, or ones that know the Porkies can be a great way to round out your elopement day.
