How to Elope in Detroit: Your Ultimate Guide!

Are you dreaming of an intimate, stress-free wedding with just the two of you, right in the heart of the city? Eloping in Detroit offers a perfect blend of urban energy, historical charm, and stunning backdrops for unforgettable moments. As an elopement photographer, I've seen firsthand how magical the Motor City can be for couples looking to do things a little differently.

Here's everything you need to know to make your Detroit elopement as seamless and special as possible.

Detroit is a city that's continually evolving (especially in the last few years), with a mix of modern flair and old-world character. It offers some of the most beautiful and unexpected locations for a wedding. Whether you're into cityscapes, lush gardens, or unique architectural gems, Detroit has something for everyone. And if you are an adventurous couple who loves exploring, you'll love the hidden treasures Detroit has to offer.

Step 1: Choose Your Location(s)

One of the best parts of eloping in Detroit is the variety of locations available. From intimate spots filled with history to modern, artistic venues, Detroit's unique blend of styles means you'll find the perfect backdrop for your ceremony and photos. Here are a few standout options:

1. Belle Isle Park

If you're looking for a little greenery amidst the city buzz, Belle Isle is a must. It's a beautiful island park located on the Detroit River, and it offers a mix of stunning waterfront views, lush gardens, city skylines (from Detroit and Windsor, CA), and historic landmarks like the Belle Isle Conservatory. It's perfect for a quiet, nature-filled ceremony while still being just minutes from downtown Detroit.

2. The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA)

For art-loving couples, the DIA offers a breathtaking setting. Imagine exchanging your vows surrounded by incredible murals and classic architecture. The exterior of the museum is equally impressive, offering a stately backdrop for your photos with it's marble staircases and treed, grassy lawns. Plus, if you're eloping during the colder months, you can still take advantage of its indoor beauty.

3. Eastern Market

If you want something a little more offbeat and artsy, Detroit's Eastern Market district is filled with colorful murals, urban vibes, and industrial charm. It's a great spot for couples who want a vibrant, eclectic feel to their photos, and the market itself can provide a fun atmosphere for pre- or post-ceremony adventures.

4. Rooftop Views

For skyline lovers, there are several rooftops around downtown Detroit that offer panoramic views of the city. These spots are perfect for couples who want to elope with a backdrop of Detroit's iconic skyline, especially at sunset. Some popular venues offer private rooftop access, but there are also public spaces that provide incredible views.

5. Historic Venues

For a touch of old-world charm. Detroit has no shortage of historic venues, like The Whitney Mansion or the Detroit Yacht Club. These locations offer grand settings for couples who want something a bit more formal without the hassle of a full-sized wedding.

To legally elope in Detroit, you'll need a marriage license. If you live in the state of Michigan, you will need to get a marriage license from the county you live in. If you live outside of the state of Michigan, you can get a marriage license from Wayne County (Detroit's county). Be sure to apply for your marriage license within 30 days of your elopement day because the marriage license is only good for 30 days before it's signed and returned to the county. Please contact your county clerk and/or website to get more details.

Officiants: You'll need an officiant to make your marriage official. Detroit has plenty of options, from ordained friends and family members to professional officiants. Some couples even opt for a simple courthouse ceremony and then head out to their chosen locations for a private vow exchange.

Even though you're eloping, you deserve a team that can help make the day unforgettable. From forists and makeup artists to a photographer (if you need a photographer, keep reading!), your team will ensure your day runs smoothly and looks just the way you envision.

If you are looking for an elopement photographer/videographer, we can help! We are Erika and Stephen and we own a photo and video team for elopements in Michigan. As your elopement photographer/videographer, I'll help guide you through the entire process - from finding the perfect time for the best light to choosing the most photogenic locations. My goal is to capture the raw emotions of the day and create images that tell your unique story. I help you research locations, times of day, permits, vendors, activities, and everything else that goes into an elopement day. You will make the final decisions, I will definitely help you with finding great options and will be deeply involved with the planning.

Even with a small, intimate elopement, it's important to have a rough timeline so you can make the most of your day. Here's a sample timeline for an 8 hour elopement day:

- 11:00 AM: Starting at your hotel/Air B&B, we will covering you and your partner getting ready. This is also where all details will be captured including attire, rings, vow books, flowers, shoes, etc.
- 1:00 PM: First Look. A first look is a great moment for you and your partner to have a quiet, intimate moment to see each other for the first time on your elopement day.
- 2:00 PM: Exchange of Vows. We will go to your main location to exchange your vows.
- 2:30 PM: Start Exploring the City! We will continue on to all the other locations to capture beautiful portraits of the two of you! Plus, during this time, we will go off and do any other planned activities you may have planned.
- 5:00 PM: Celebrate your elopement at one of Detroit's renowned restaurants or bars.
- 6:00 PM: Head to the perfect location for sunset photos and end the night with another intimate moment to share together!

Of course the times can be adjusted to fit the time of year and any other activities you may want to use, but this is a great sample to give an idea of how your day can go!

Eloping is all about doing the things your way, so once you've said your "I dos", it's time to celebrate! Whether that means grabbing a drink at a speakeasy, going on a food tour through Detroit's best spots, or dancing the night away to live music, Detroit offers plenty of ways to make your wedding day memorable.

Eloping in Detroit is an adventure unlike any other. With its rich history, diverse landscapes, and urban energy, this city is the perfect place for couples who want an intimate, meaningful wedding day without the pressure of a traditional ceremony. As your photographer, I'm here to capture every moment of your journey, from the quiet anticipation to the wild celebration.
